| dc.description | IPCC SREX regional outreach meeting was held on 9-10 May 2012 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the Overseas Development Institute, Norway’s Climate and Pollution Agency, Norway’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Climate and Development Knowledge Network are taking the lead in organizing the events to provide information about the possible impacts of climate extremes and disasters by region, and options for managing the potential risks arising from them, as assessed in the IPCC Special Report. Dr. Youba Sokona chaired the meeting, Coordinator of the African Climate Policy Center (ACPC), UNECA, and panellists were Dr. Abebe Haile Gabriel, Director REA African Union Commission; Dr. Chris Field, IPCC WGII (co-chair); Minister of Foreign Affairs, Norway and Dr. Tewolde Berhan Gebre Egziabher, Director-General Environmental Protection Agency of Ethiopia. Delegates were invited to meet youth groups concerned about Ethiopia's environment and climate change. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) prepared a special report titled "Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters for Advancing Climate Change Adaptation" (SREX). Dr. Abebe Haile Gebriel, Director of ERA African Union Commission made a speech and indicating that Africa has been the most venerable to the impact of climate change and adaptation is the priority for Africa. The African Union Commission has been elaborating on the African climate change strategy, on the impact of climate change which Africa has been facing. the African Ministerial Conference on Environment recently reviewed. Obviously, issues of managing disaster risk and adaptation make a substantive component of the draft strategy document. The commission has also been supporting the efforts of AU member states and Regional economic communities in terms of enhancing their capacities. | en |
