dc.descriptionThe United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) commenced its first session in Addis Ababa on December 29, 1958. The opening was held in the parliament by Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia. Representatives of member states were composed of all independent countries within the Continent and administering authorities. Dependent countries hold status as Associate Members. Several countries not members of ECA were attended as observers, and the Specialized Agencies as of the United Nations are represented as well as a number of non-governmental organizations.en
