dc.description | The 78th General Assembly took place on September 18 to 26 in New York under the theme, “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 agenda and its sustainable development goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and the sustainability for all. The 2023 report, titled “Accelerating the recovery from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and African Union Agenda 2063 at all levels”, was released on the margins of the 78th United Nations General Assembly on 18 - 19 September 2023. The report assessed Africa’s progress in implementing the SDGs and the African Union’s Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want, amidst unfolding crises. It focused on five key SDGs, highlighting progress, the challenges, and the numerous opportunities for improving Africa’s development prospects
Bartholomew Armah is the Chief of Development Planning at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. He was speaking at the Africa Sustainable Development Report 2023 launch on the margins of the 78th UN General Assembly in New York. He stated that It’s the only report that simultaneously tracks the performance of the continent on the two Agendas. Several critical findings of the report are noteworthy. The first is that the continent is making very good progress regarding access to mobile coverage. It’s on track to meet that target, but the other findings are concerning. One concern is access to safely managed sanitation, where the continent has regressed, and access to safely managed water systems, where there is progress but it's not fast enough. The second area is energy, where the findings are positive. The Renewable Energy Mix is about 57 percent, much higher than the global average of 19 percent. However, there has been a slight retrogression of that indicator. Most of our renewable energy comes from hydropower. The message here is the need to diversify further and leverage our other natural assets, such as solar and wind power so that we can take advantage of our green resources. | en |
