The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa convened 250 experts and opinion leaders for the 17th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee of Experts (ICE). A special report was presented on NTV to discuss the challenges of energy access and security in Eastern Africa. The experts pointed out that Eastern Africa has one of the lowest rates of electricity access in the world. For example, in South Sudan, only 1 percent of the population has access to electricity, in Burundi 2 percent, in DR Congo 11 percent, and in Uganda 12 percent. They emphasized the need for increased investments in energy and structural transformation to tackle this issue.en
