| dc.description | The International Conference on Youth and Democratization in Africa: Lessons and Comparative Experiences was held on November 1 - 3, 2012, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA-GPAD) jointly organized the conference with the Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA, and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) - Regional Office. During the Conference, Mr. Carlos Lopes expressed Africa is a young continent with up to 60% of its population under the age of twenty-five. Growth rates on the continent have averaged nearly 6% since the turn of the century. Indeed, we are at the cusp of the African moment. Yet, Africa’s youth who should give momentum to this process are largely alienated and marginalized. The education we offer still too often is not the key priority. Many are under-employed or jobless. Young Africans are barely involved in policy formulation and programme design. Their participation in politics and decision-making is limited and often ad hoc. Instead, their energies are sometimes unfortunately used to stir up mindless conflict and violence. | en |
