| dc.description | The 18th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the AU kicked off on January 29, 2012, at the new African Union Conference Center (AUCC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, held under the theme: "Boosting Intra-African Trade." The Heads of State and the heads of the 54 African Union member countries proceeded in the morning with a tree-planting ceremony at a site identified for that purpose within the premises of the new building at the AU headquarters. It was a symbolic act aimed at sensitizing the African population to the need to preserve green vegetation to fight drought on the continent. At the Ordinary Session of the Assembly on January 29, 2012, the Secretary-General specified in Libya that our political mission is to help the new transitional authorities organize elections and improve public security, rule of law, and transitional justice. We are also working closely with the African Union to monitor the after-effects of the Libyan conflict and cap the spread of weapons in the Sahel. In Egypt, he again encouraged the transitional authorities to guarantee the peaceful and early handover of power to the civilian government, uphold human rights, release political prisoners, and accelerate the pace of reform. | en |
