| dc.description | The 18th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the AU kicked off on 29 January 2012 at the new African Union Conference Center (AUCC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, held under the theme: “Boosting Intra-African Trade.” The Heads of State and heads of the 54 African Union member countries proceeded in the morning with a tree-planting ceremony at a site identified for that purpose within the premises of the new building at the AU headquarters. It was a symbolic act aimed at sensitizing the African population to the need to preserve green vegetation to fight drought on the continent. At the Ordinary Session of the Assembly on 29, January 2012, the Secretary-General stated We need to take a preventative approach towards safeguarding human rights. The Arab Spring brought about many surprises, as traditional indicators did not indicate the instability of these countries. Beneath the surface lies prevention, exclusion, and abuse. The women and men who are testing the public square throughout the region serve as both inspiration and a reminder. They remind us that leaders must listen to their people. While trade and investment are crucial for development, Africa's for the Future also invests in civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights. | en |
