dc.description | The 44th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council commenced at the African Union (AU) headquarters in Addis Ababa on February 15-16, 2024. Over the course of two days, African foreign ministers are convened to discuss advancing the continent on matters of peace, security, regional integration, and development.
The opening statement was made by Claver Gatete United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). In his statement, he mentioned “This Summit marks a pivotal moment in our commitment to transform our education system to one that is ‘fit for purpose’ in today’s world. Education is a basic human right and a key enabler for achieving our collective socio-economic development objectives.”
For 2024, the AU is placing a significant emphasis on education and training. The year's theme, "Educating an Africa Fit for the 21st Century: Building Resilient Education Systems for Increased Access to Inclusive, Quality Lifelong Learning," underscores this focus.
The Acting President of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), Hon. Dr. Ashebir W. Gayo is leading the PAP delegation to ensure that the voices of African Parliamentarians are integral to the advancement of the continental agenda. The Executive Council is also expected to advise on various operational aspects and continuity of Parliamentary business at the PAP.
The third Vice President, Hon. Lucia Dos Passos, numerous PAP members, and Secretariat representatives, were all present in Addis Ababa as part of the PAP delegation.
As a reminder, the Executive Council, comprising Ministers of Foreign Affairs or their appointed delegates, was responsible for coordinating and deciding on policies in areas pertinent to Member States’ interests. The Council is accountable to the Assembly, deliberates on matters forwarded to it, and oversees the execution of Assembly-formulated policies. | en |
