| dc.description | The fifty-fifth session of the Economic Commission for Africa consists of a preparatory meeting of the Committee of Experts of the Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development held from March 15-21, 2023. The ministerial segment of the Conference followed it. In addition to considering the statutory matters of the Commission, the Conference was one of the premier forums on the continent for dialogue and exchanges of views among African ministers responsible for finance, planning, and economic development and governors of central banks on issues pertinent to the development agenda of Africa. The Conference's theme was "Fostering recovery and transformation in Africa to reduce inequalities and vulnerabilities.
Africa High-Level Working Group meeting on Global Financial Architecture was held during the conference. African Clean Energy transition would require investments of about $190 billion year over 2026-2030, said Deputy Executive Secretary Hanan Morsy, who lamented that "the financing needs are arising at a time when the average public debt relative to GDP in Africa exceeds 60% of GDP" and calls for a Strengthening of the International Debt Legal Framework Round: Enhanced collective action clauses; Anti-vulture fund legislation and state-contingent debt instruments.
Ghana Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, on the need to reform the global financial architecture, also said, "We cannot pretend that things are ok; our countries do not have the needed access to resources for recovery. | en |
