dc.description | The 2022 African Economic Conference (AEC) was held on 09- 11 December 2022 in Balaclava, in the island nation of Mauritius, with a strong call for Africa to adopt smart technologies to tackle what speakers described as ‘the looming climate change threat’ to the continent.
The 2022 African Economic Conference (AEC 2022) was jointly organized by the African Development Bank (AfDB), the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
A Plenary Session on Uncertainty and the Future of Sustainable Development was held during the conference, and the session reflected on uncertainty in development trajectories; the session engaged the panelists on how development policies can be predictable in the face of climatic, economic, and technological uncertainties and how do we manage the new uncertainty complex and thrive in the face of it in a developing context.
Keynote was addressed by Dr. Pedro Conceicao, Director of Human Development Report Office, UNDP- Virtual participation, and moderated by Dr. Raymond Gilpin, Chief Economist, Regional Bureau for Africa, UNDP; the panelists were:-Hon. Kavydass Ramano, Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Mauritius; Ms. Winnie Cheche, Young Conservationist, Blogger, Climate Activist, Volunteer, and Communication Lead, Kenya Environmental Action Network, Kenya; Prof. David Luke, Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa, London School of Economics and Political Science; Mr. Jakkie Cilliers, founder and former Executive Director of the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), South Africa- Virtual participation; and the rapporteur was Dr, Jacob Assa, UNDP. | en |
