The 2022 African Economic Conference (AEC) was held on 09- 11 December 2022 in Balaclava, in the island nation of Mauritius, with a strong call for Africa to adopt smart technologies to tackle what speakers described as ‘the looming climate change threat’ to the continent. A plenary session on the High-Level Dialogue of Development Partners on the Just Energy Transition in Africa was held. It was moderated by Ms. Bronwyn Nielsen, CEO of The Nielsen Network (Media & News Company), and the panelists were:-Dr. Hanan Morsy, Deputy Executive Secretary and Chief Economist, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA); Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa, Assistant Administrator, Regional Director for Africa, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); Prof. Kevin Urama, Acting Chief Economist and Vice-President the African Development Bank Group (AfDB); Dr. Marit Kitaw, Interim Director of the African Minerals Development Center (AMDC), African Union Commission; Dr. Richard Munang, Africa Regional Climate Change Coordinator of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP); and Dr. Victoria Kwakwa, World Bank Vice President for Eastern and Southern Africa This high-level dialogue was aimed at gathering consensus to contribute to the common position and focused on discussing possible pathways to a just energy transition in the continent, identifying concrete recommendations, and charting an effective way forward for building coalitions and partnerships in support of member states towards the design of national and regional energy transition strategies and their implementation. A robust partnership model among key African institutions and key international partners is needed, supported by firm empirical evidence and analyses, to implement a just and equitable energy transition in Africa.en
