| dc.description | The sixth African Development Forum convened by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the African Union Commission (AUC), and the African Development Bank (AfDB) was held in Addis Ababa from 19 to 21 November 2008. The theme of the Forum was: Action on gender equality, women’s empowerment, and ending violence against women. The Forum aimed to review progress made toward gender equality, women’s empowerment and ending violence against women to identify the significant constraints and the concrete actions required to speed up progress. The Forum was attended by more than 800 delegates, women, men, and youth, representing Governments; international, regional and subregional organizations; community-based organizations; civil society organizations; the private sector; traditional and religious leaders; trade unions, the media; and the youth.
This plenary session set the scene for the break-out sessions by highlighting the progress on the actions that have been done to meet the commitments made by African countries to end violence against women. The session highlighted what has worked well, the achievements, good and effective practices, and the major outstanding challenges and gaps. | en |
