| dc.description | The UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20) Africa Regional Preparatory Meeting was held in conjunction with the seventh session of the Committee on Food Security and Sustainable Development (CFSSD-7). From 20-25 October 2011 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The meeting, organized by UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the African Development Bank (AfDB), and the African Union (AU), was an opportunity to deliberate on the themes and objectives of Rio+20, agree on a consensus statement, and adopt a draft resolution on Africa’s effective participation at Rio+20.
Mr. Sabaa drew attention to the fact that most African economies were dependent on a natural resource base exposed to the adverse effects of climate change. Despite the close relationship between climate change and development, the two tended to be discussed in separate forums. Africa was responsible for just 4 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions but was disproportionately affected by global warming. As such, it had to be played a full part in climate change debates and decision-making. | en |
