Rio+20 Africa Regional Preparatory Meeting: Session 1: Progress in The Implementation of Sustainable Development Commitments and New and Emerging Challenges
| dc.description | The UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD or Rio+20) Africa Regional Preparatory Meeting was held in conjunction with the seventh session of the Committee on Food Security and Sustainable Development (CFSSD-7). It took place from 20-25 October 2011 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The meeting, organized by UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the African Development Bank (AfDB), and the African Union (AU), was an opportunity to deliberate on the themes and objectives of Rio+20, agree on a consensus statement, and adopt a draft resolution on Africa’s effective participation at Rio+20. Mr. Luc Gnacadja, Executive Secretary the United Nations Convention to Combat Drought and Desertification (UNCCD) Secretariat, said that the message from the floor had been clear: African countries must work to bring about peace and stability, without which sustainable development was impossible; the development of intra-African trade and cooperation was key, and Africa would not be going to Rio de Janeiro as a beggar because the developed world had a very clear responsibility toward it. | en |
