| dc.description | The Conference on Hydropower for Sustainable Development in Africa took place 31 March – 1 April 2011 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Conference focused on the following themes: Africa's renewable energy potential, including hydropower development in Ethiopia; regional cooperation for water and energy, including transboundary issues; sustainability and good practices; and finance and investments.
The fourth pillar of sustainability is knowledge. Building on a proven, advanced technology foundation, significant efforts in the hydropower sector have been applied to define sustainability in the economic, social, and environmental dimensions. From the role of hydropower in climate-change mitigation and adaptation to measuring sustainability performance in the planning, implementation, and operation of hydropower projects, a great deal of knowledge-building has been going on. Experiences gained in the sustainability assessment of projects worldwide were presented and discussed for more informed decision-making in the future. | en |
