dc.description | Panel Discussion on the Africa Project Report 2013 was held on 23 May on a theme "Equity in Extractives Africa Progress Report 2013 Stewarding Africa's Natural Resources for All".
Published every year, the Africa Progress Report was the Africa Progress Panel's flagship publication. The report draws on Africa's best research and analysis and compiles it refreshingly and provocatively. The Panel recommends a series of policy choices and actions for African policymakers who have primary responsibility for Africa's progress and international partners and civil society organizations through the report.
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf says though Africa is richly endowed with massive natural resources, limited capacity to understand and duly negotiate complex trading arrangements have in the past led to the characterization of a natural resource paradox – resource wealth amid human poverty.
Also speaking, the Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Dr. Carlos Lopes, informed the Panel that the report sent a compelling message and that it comes at a time when several institutions interested in Africa's development are now sending clear messages to the leaders of the continent on how to proceed.
Dr. Lopes suggested that the global context of partnership and economic transformation and development is changing very fast and indicated that by 2030, the global output would be more than 50 percent of results coming from developing countries. "Africa," he said, "was playing its part well, and its potential is now recognized."
Also making comments, Dr. Yao Graham of Third World Network-Africa said 20 years ago, the problem was about what Africa could do to attract investment. Still, the focus now should be what attracted investments can do for the African continent because it has attracted a lot of investment with minimal impact. | en |
