dc.descriptionThe first-ever celebration of International Translation Day at the ECA was celebrated on 10 October 2018 in Addis Ababa. The event was marked by insightful presentations and discussions on the theme “Machine translation versus human translation.” “Languages play a vital role in the development of cultural diversity and in facilitating intercultural dialogue and bringing nations together,” said Giovanie Biha, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). She said that multilingualism was a core value of the United Nations, stating, “on 24 May 2017, the General Assembly adopted resolution 71/288on the role of language professionals in connecting nations and fostering peace, understanding, and development, and declared 30 September International Translation Day.”en
